“The Ontario Provincial Police will be out patrolling, highways, waterway and trails to ensure the safety of Ontarians and visitors” states Staff Sergeant Tim Foster.  “My concern is distracted drivers.  Stay focused on the road, wear your seatbelt, don’t drink and drive, pull over if you are tired, and don’t talk on the phone or text while driving.  Wear your lifejacket while boating.  Wear a helmet while operating an ATV.”

"A moment of inattention can result in injury and death," states Inspector Mark Andrews - Traffic and Marine Commander, North East Region. "Drivers are drifting across the centre line for whatever reason, possibly distraction or fatigue and slamming into oncoming traffic.    Drivers seem to let down their guard in sunny weather and are less alert to what's going on around them."

So far this year, more than 40 people have been killed on the Region’s highways, waterways, and trails.  All available resources and personnel will be deployed for the Labour Day Weekend as the OPP will continue to crack down on aggressive drivers, those who drink and drive, and those fail to buckle up or fail to use safety equipment.

Keep our emergency services and police officers safe, move over for stopped emergency vehicles on the side of the road with emergency lights activated – it’s the law.

August 27, 2009 MAN DIES BOATING MISHAP    Wahnapitae River,

Sturgeon Chutes (French River, ON)The Ontario Provincial Police were called to the scene of a fatal boating incident at the Wahnapitae River, S turgeon Chutes yesterday evening (Wednesday, August 27, 2009).

The deceased, John RYAN, 76 years of age, Stone Lake, Wisconsin, USA, was pulled from the Sturgeon Chutes after his motorboat capsized in the turbulent waters. RYAN was vacationing at an area lodge and had gone out fishing with a local youth earlier that day.  Concern was raised when the duo failed to return for dinner and the lodge owner went out to look for the overdue fishermen.  He located them and their severely damaged vessel on the shores of the Chutes.

Police investigation revealed that RYAN had been operating the boat when he was caught in the whirlpools near the falls and both occupants were tossed into the water.  Although there were life jackets onboard only the youth was able to pull his on before he hit the water.  Once he managed to surface, he was able to pull the unconscious RYAN to the shore but his CPR attempts failed to revive the older man.

A post-mortem examination was conducted today, at the Sudbury Regional Hospital - Laurentian Site. Results indicate the cause of death as drowning.  Alcohol was not a factor in the incident.
